Backpacking East Sierras Sherwin Lakes Day 3 (June 2024)

Hiking the long way to see another pristine lake.

See all the posts in the Backpacking East Sierras Sherwin Lakes (June 2024) series.

Crossing Sherwin Creek is the first major obstacle, but luckily there are some downed tree trunks.
Warming up with some bouldering!
The country is simply stunning.
Trying to capture the perspective.
A little more perspective–these are big rocks.

Just after we cross this boulder field, we immediately gain several hundred feet of elevation on the trail. “Trail” is a generous term as it is more akin to a narrow animal track going straight up the side of the hill.

We reach the top and begin to poke around.
Looking for signs of native peoples.
Of course we had to stop at the last patch of snow we can see.

We spend a fair amount of time tooling around up here–we even climb into a boulder bowl to make sure we don’t miss out on anything. Once we’re good and sure that we aren’t missing out, we take off north to go downwards towards a smaller lake which is just below Sherwin Lakes.

Crossing Sherwin Creek again, but much lower down and to the north.
Another fantastically scenic backcountry lake–also full of fish!
Nothing beats a backcountry nap on a warm rock after you’ve been walking around all day.
Heading back to camp after washing up and relaxing at the lower, unnamed lake.
A terrific view of Bloody Mountain to the south of us.
Posing for the requisite group picture–someone definitely farted.

This wraps up Day 3 in the Backpacking East Sierras Sherwin Lakes (June 2024) series. Be sure to pick up the continuation of the trip in the Backpacking East Sierras Sherwin Lakes Day 4 (June 2024) post.
